I used to be a flower, used to dress like my friends dressed, that changed, as I grew up (and still am) I realized it got me nowhere, being myself is better. I know people who smoke and drink just to fit in, to feel like they belong, and guess what, it gets them nowhere, just gives them more problems because at last it is not their place to be and as the time passes they will feel more uncomfortable. People prefer to stick to society being another person, not true to themselves, some make things they don’t even want to, like smoke, drink, and change the way they want to dress. Personally, as a teenager I can assure that now a days there are more flowers than weeds. In the other hand weeds, he refers to himself as a weed, one true to his roots (true to himself), no matter how ugly he is he prefers to be that way and free as well, “I’d rather be unseen”. He refers to flowers to the people around him, the ones who care about what they appear to be in society, the ones handled by others and that don’t live freely. Noboa compares two type of plants, weeds and flowers. Identity is having distinctive characteristics, ones no one else has, it is having unique qualities, and that’s what Julio Noboa Polanco expresses in his poem “Identity”. Identity is what makes you different, special from the rest in society. It’s an experience every human being has to go through in a certain point in their lives, specifically during the teenage years. Where they’re praised, handled, and pluckedĬreating an identity means forming who you want to be, your personality, your attitudes, your voice, the point of view each person has of their own persona in society.
